Setting up the whelping room went very well. But with the transfer from the pool, more and more work to keep the pups clean now goes to Dave and Me. So we have been busy. As well we have been introducing solid food and it has been a hit and miss learning experience. Our two blue pups need no help in learning how to eat. But we have a few smaller pups that are a little slower at picking it up. They also were a little slower getting their teeth. Yes that is right, our pups now have razor sharp teeth and are starting to bite toes and one another. Nothing is safe from their jaws.
Another big thing is getting their collars. For those of you who have been following the pups so far here is the list of who's who.
Miss Pink Rear is now Miss Harley Pink
Miss Pink Right is now Miss Reflective Heart Pink
Miss Red Left is now just Miss Red
Miss Purple Right is now just Miss Purple
Mr. Blue Right is now Mr. Blue Stripes
Mr. Blue Left is now Mr. Blue Paws
Mr. Green Right is now Mr. Teal Squares
Mr. Green Left is now Mr. Teal Diamonds
Mr. White is now Mr. Silver
Mr. Yellow, was Mr. Black for awhile, and now is Mr. Camo

Puppies grow fast. In the past three weeks, they have transitioned from images on an x-ray to walking, talking, eating, seeing, and hearing. Maggie has been a tremendous Mom, keeping them fed and bathed. But as we transition them to puppy kibble, even she is having a hard time keeping up with the poop. So between food, poop, and ten pups, the whelping pool is getting too small. Today we are going to set up the whelping room as a nursery, and give everyone more room. This way we can hopefully get them to pee, poo and eat on the paper side, and play and sleep on the blanket side. Will keep you posted.
Blue right howling!

The last couple of days have seen some tremendous changes in the puppies. They are changing from peanuts into pups. Their eyes are opening (so I don't like to take too many pictures unless they are sleeping). They are starting to stand and walk (mostly fall so they look kind of drunk). And some are interested in Mom's food.

So it seems that I need to upload videos to YouTube and then create a link on the videos page. It has not been working quite the way I had hoped, so here is the link to the youtube channel. Hope it works.

Time is just flying by for our pups. But who ever thought that when we did this breeding in August on a 25C day, that the pups would not even be a week old, and there is snow on the ground. So we have had to come up with a teat protector for Maggie. Don't want those feeders getting frost bite!
I am trying to keep the pictures up to date. But it seems the video has changed, so I am actually taking the videos with my phone and uploading to YouTube. I am trying to link on this website, but you can just keep checking out YouTube if this one does not work.:D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRrD0x10xhE&feature=em-upload_owner ;

The puppies had made it through the first week of their lives. They are turning from peanuts into interesting beings learning to crawl and walk, and are getting quite vocal. Maggie is being a supper Mom, keeping them fed and clean.

Today was x-ray time. And yes we thought Maggie was getting big and yes we thought maybe another litter of 8....maybe. So do your best... there are eight for sure, and counts are 10 or 11 depending on what you attach to what. I guess Maggie and Bustin' don't have a fertility issue:lol:
Pups expected on the ground next Friday, if Maggie can hold onto them for that long!

After an exciting roadtrip to Illinois this summer, we are happy to report that Maggie and Bustin did it right, and they are going to have pups!
Bustin' also got the final leg of his Master Hunter's this past weekend, so he is one chocolate lab that we and the Butikas's are really proud of right now! He is the Man! Congratulations Bill and Marcia!
Maggie will get an x-ray on October 19, to confirm numbers, always useful during whelping so we know when to relax and rest. The litter is expected to arrive on October 26. So it will be a busy fall here at the Chocolate Clan.

No breeding guarantees puppies. Once again we were disappointed that AI did not take with Maggie. We tried twice with AI, once in the summer of 2016 and then in January of 2017. While we waited until her expected due date, with a little anticipation, we did not expect puppies as her ultrasound showed nothing, and Maggie never acted like she was pregnant. No getting big, no nipple enlargement, no hair loss, and no mellowing. We were sad to announce that there was no litter in 2016 and again in 2017. It is time to go back to a natural breeding. Hope we can get down to Illinois sometime this summer.
